Stranraer And District Chamber Of Commerce

Stranraer District Chamber of CommerceThe town and surrounding area are facing difficult times ahead thanks to the 'Credit Crunch' and the impending move of the Stena terminal to Cairnryan. The loss of several high street outlets, alongside the closure of Woolworths, have had an impact on the town's economy already. The knock-on closure of the Baby Deer outlet on the industrial park has already cost the town around 20 jobs

How Stena's move will impact on the town is yet to be discerned, but the Chamber firmly believe the town's business community needs to organise now and to prepare for these changes.

Stranraer District Chamber of Commerce holds meetings, monthly, at local venues in the town to which all members are welcome to attend. At these meetings we can formulate policy to ensure the business community has a voice at local, regional, national and international levels through representatives of those organisations.

The Chamber has recently attended meetings and workshops with the Waterfront development teams to ensure the views of local business are being considered and to allow us to feedback to our membership how the project stands.

We also plan to hold networking meetings throughout the coming year and to invite keynote speakers to these events. Details of which will be posted on this page, so please check back often to see what's new.

Title: DG Tickets 4 Troops

A new website has been launched in D&G: www.dgtickets4troops.org.uk. The website is to raise support for our local servicemen and women, and especially to provide them with discounted or free access to sporting events and facilities.

The idea came from local councillor Peter Duncan: "With British Armed Forces serving in difficult and dangerous situations across the world, I have launched the Dumfries and Galloway Tickets for Troops campaign. Our Armed Forces do an absolutely fantastic job in very difficult and dangerous situations and many of these brave men and women call Dumfries and Galloway home. Tickets for Troops is a initiative where we, as a local community, can give serving military personnel the hero's welcome home that they deserve."

"Tickets for Troops is an opportunity for sports organisation and leisure facilities to donate tickets and welcome home members of the Armed Forces. They do a terrific job and we want to say 'thank you'. We are asking for sports and leisure facilities to donate to this initiative. I'm delighted that Queen of the South FC and Stranraer FC are leading the way by donating tickets, and hope that many more club and facilities will get on board too. Our aim is to have a wide range options for over the Christmas period, which is a particularly special time for troops."

"I can't say how thankful we are to the men and women across Dumfries and Galloway who risk their lives daily to keep our country safe. I encourage local clubs and facilities to rally behind this initiative to recognise what a fantastic job our local troops do."

The idea has been endorsed by both Stranraer FC and Queen of the South FC:

Eric Moffat, Secretary, Queen of the South:

"We are delighted to be supporting Tickets for Troops. A lot of our fans are ex-services and it's only right that we recognise what a fantastic job British men and women are doing in the Armed Forces at the moment."

Alex Connor, Chairman of Stranraer FC:

"Stranraer FC are committed to supporting community projects and Tickets for Troops is an excellent idea. Personally I have grandson in Afghanistan, and I know what a great job they all do. If there is anything we can do to support local community projects well."

The Tickets for Troops initiative is simple. You decide a quota of tickets or passes that you would like to donate to this scheme. It could be 2 free rounds of golf per month, 10 free tickets per match, or one free visit to the health club per month, whatever you want. Details are then passed-on to any military personnel with a valid military card, who can use your allocation.

Once your quota is used up, the personnel can wait until the next month. DG Tickets4Troops are asking participating organisations to run the scheme from November 2009 to April 2010, when a lot of personnel will be back from serving abroad.

The DGTickets4Troops website was built by South Rhins Web Design.
